Car Battery Recycling Benefits

premier • Sep 14, 2018

Nothing lasts forever, car batteries included. While it may be easy to throw that old auto battery into the dumpster, a better and safer option is car battery recycling at an authorized recycling facility .

Car batteries are recycled at a rate of 90% in the U.S.  With that said, year after year, millions of car batteries will not be disposed of correctly. This affects not only the well-being of humans and animals, but also the environment.

The Importance Of Car Battery Recycling

Similar to other types of recycling, recycling a car battery contributes to a healthy environment.

Using the recycle option allows for some of the dead battery components to be repurposed into different products or new batteries. Auto batteries consist of various materials for reuse like:

  • Plastic – can be used for new battery cases and also turned into just about anything.
  • Lead – can be used in new batteries and interestingly enough, has been turned into solar cells .
  • Electrolytes – can be re-used as a new battery electrolyte solution or for use in other industrial processes.
  • Sulfate Crystals – can be used as an ingredient in glass and laundry detergent.

Car batteries contain toxic substances and heavy metals like mercury, lead, sulfuric acid, nickel and other elements that can contaminate soil and water if just merely thrown in the garbage where it ends up in a landfill.

How To Handle Dead Auto Batteries

If you are handling and transporting your old battery yourself, be sure to wear gloves and goggles when removing the battery and place it in a leak-proof container where it remains upright during transportation. Remember, a dead car battery is just as hazardous as a new one.
